Cosy hideaways with mismatched interiors and a delicious vegan restaurant, nestled in a Brandenburg village between trees and lakes

WHAT?

An hour away from Berlin, just over the border into Brandenburg, you find yourself in a different world. Shades of green stretch as far as the eyes can see: meadows and forests are broken up by rivers and lakes, and only a few groups of houses break up the landscape. In one such village lies Gasthof Falkenhorst. From the outside it looks like a traditional German Kneipe, but you’d be mistaken, for within you find three stunning apartments, as well as a restaurant serving delicious vegan food.

After years working in the corporate world, owners Annika and Hugo decided they wanted to give back and begin providing people with experiences that would make them happy. And they’ve succeeded, not only do guests return summer after summer (month after month in some cases), but local Brandenburgers frequently visit the restaurant and happily chat with those in town for the weekend, it’s a beautiful sight to behold. Apartments are unique, full of individual touches and splashes of calming colours, which mimic the natural beauty of the area.

WHY?

I fell in love because...
  • Annika and Hugo’s passion radiates, and the love they put into every detail shines through
  • You’re surrounded by stunning forest and lakes that make it oh-so-easy to unwind
You must...
  • The Spree is a 7-minute walk away, where there’s an amazing Badestelle to chill out at
  • Eat in the restaurant! It’s open on Saturday and Sunday but you must book ahead
You might dislike...
  • There are no shops in the village, and the closest supermarket is 4km away
  • Getting around without a bike or a car is hard (bring a bike or rent one from Annika and Hugo)

WHO?

Introducing Annika and Hugo!

“We were looking for a property where we could host guests in the countryside, somewhere that wasn’t too far from Berlin. We found this place online and took a leap of faith!”

They love…

“It's a beautiful, quiet area. There’s a forest behind our village, and we love to walk through it. Plus the Spree is nearby where there’s an amazing Badestelle (the river water is sandy underfoot and water is always clear).”

Annika and Hugo’s insider tips
  • Hire a canoe or SUP from the Badestelle and explore the river.
  • After a dip in the river, taking a walk along the Spree.
  • Cycle through the surrounding forests and get lost (but not too lost!) in nature.
  • Eat in our restaurant! We’re really proud of our food, and we’d love for you to try it!

Gasthof Falkenhorst

"Such a gem. We had everything we needed to make ourselves feel at home, and Annika and Hugo gave us some great tips for nearby walks and bike trips."

  • Food: All apartments have basic kitchens with hobs, pots and pans, and cooking utensils, as well as a French press, salt, pepper, coffee, tea, sugar, and washing up liquid. The nearest supermarket is 4km away. Annika and Hugo’s restaurant is open on Saturday and Sunday (reserve in advance), and there are a few restaurants in neighbouring villages.
  • For families: Children are allowed in the Cosy and Garden apartments. Kids up to (and including) 2 stay for free. A baby cot is available on request (free) but needs to be reserved in advance.
  • On-site equipment: There are some board games, DVD's, books and candles.
  • Optional extras: You can rent bikes for 10 euros a bike per day, guests are asked to reserve in advance.
  • Help: Annika and Hugo live on-site so are there if needed.
  • Remember to pack: In the summer, you’ll need beach towels and mosquito spray.
  • Pets: One dog is allowed per apartment. They are not allowed on the sofa or bed, and cannot be left unattended.
  • Sustainability: All food and products are vegan, and they use green electricity and gas.
  • To note: From Friday to Sunday there is a 2-night minimum stay. Additionally, Annika and Hugo are constantly renovating and improving every part of the property (using the money they generate from your stays). It's a long-term project and not every part of it is new and chic. Regardless, there is an amazing charm and really good energy.

WHERE?

Gasthof Falkenhorst is a stone's throw from central Berlin.

You can arrive in under an hour by car when travelling from Berlin, and there are places to park.

With public transport, take the S Bahn or the RE train to Erkner. From here, you can catch a bus or cycle. Note that buses are quite irregular and stop running at 19:30.
