Strikingly beautiful apartments, blending hygge with industrial and farmhouse touches, located at the edge of the Upper Bavaria’s Wörthsee on an ecological working farm

WHAT?

One of the most beautiful things about countryside living is waking up with the sun and bird song, and watching as the morning light changes the sky from a dusty pink to bright blue. Even better, is when one of Germany’s warmest lakes is just a 3-minute stroll from your front door, perfect for a refreshing morning plunge, and know you’re coming home to a simple-yet-wholesome breakfast, served at one of the region’s most stylish farmhouses.

Grundlers, named for its owners Paul and Christina Grundler, is a 100-year-old working farm, which is paving the way for change in the industry. The family farm, which was taken over by Paul and Christian a few decades ago, was redesigned to be sustainably-minded, and with this transformation, the former guesthouse was revamped into a modern, bright space that entices guests to come and make themselves at home.

The individually designed apartments, housed in the former farmhouse, are bright and lofty. They are heavily influenced by northern Italian style, but effortlessly blend local craftsmanship of traditional wooden furniture and cast iron features. A highlight is the open-plan kitchen at the heart of the farmhouse, where guests can commune to share breakfast each morning. The hardest thing you’ll have to do here is decide which of the many gorgeous parts of Bavaria you’ll explore that day.

WHY?

I fell in love because...
  • The 100+ year old farmhouse has been carefully and beautifully modernised by local craftsmen; the blend of old and new is special
  • You’ll want for nothing here; owners Paul and Christina have gone out of their way to create a space that feels like a (very luxurious!) home-from-home
You must...
  • Explore the stunning region near both Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Füssen - expect mountains, gorges and crystal-clear lakes
  • Hang out in the garden and play boules, Grundlers has its own court
You might dislike...
  • The a la carte breakfast is a simple affair (bread, croissants, tea and coffee), but the impressive communal kitchen makes whipping up extras to go with it is a pleasure
  • To make the most of the gorgeous surrounding area, a car is recommended but not essential

WHO?

Introducing Paul and Christina!

“Wörthsee is our home, and the farm has been in the family for a long time. We started to transform our farm to using organic farming processes more than 20 years ago, including installing regenerative energy sources. As part of that, we had the idea to convert the existing guesthouse into a sustainable, special holiday escape.”

They love…

“The apartments are a labour of love. Thanks to the support of a small planning team from Süd Tyrol and countless, great craftsmen from the region, we converted the Grundler-Hof, a 100-year-old farm, into the GRUNDLERS guesthouse on the lake. We could not be prouder.”
