Luxury tents with sumptuous beds, oozing on 19th Century opulence, hidden amongst ancient trees at the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District

WHAT?

Framed by fields and meadows, is a charming 19th century manor house surrounded by a sprawling, landscaped garden that dates from 1229. It’s within this artistic and ancient landscape that you’ll find four strikingly beautiful and oh-so-luxurious glamping tents, which are carefully assembled annually for the warmer months by owners Nina and Albrecht who bought the space in 2019.

Former residents of London, Milan, Berlin and Bangkok, the two found this crumbling manor house and overgrown garden with a Slavic origin, and fell in love, not just with the space, but with the idea of contributing to and acting as stewards of somewhere bigger than themselves.

Albrecht is a working artist, and Nina an artist who works in fashion, and their eye for texture, colour and small details is evident in the tents, which are a small tribute to the glamping (luxury camping) culture of Britain with an aesthetic of opulence. Beyond these sumptuous sleeping spaces, you’ll find an outdoor kitchen with a firepit for warm evenings, a sauna overlooking the pond, and lots of shaded seating areas to rest and soak up the natural world.

If you can bear to leave the park, you’ll find yourself at the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District with its landscapes that inspired the artist Caspar David Friedrich: atmospheric, romantic, empty, with gorgeous light, hills and lakes.

WHY?

I fell in love because...
  • High-quality glamping is hard to come by in Germany, and these tented spaces are simply stunning
  • The surrounding landscape is beautifully dramatic and surprisingly romantic
You must...
  • Spend a few hours in the sauna, overlooking the ponds, and feel your body slow down
  • Bring binoculars and watch out for the dozens of birds that pass through the grounds, such as nightingales, herons, eagles, owls, swallows and songbirds
You might dislike...
  • There’s an additional cleaning fee added, but all towels, bathrobes and linens are included in the price
  • There’s one outdoor shower (with warm water), and two toilet blocks (compost), which are shared by all guests

WHO?

Introducing Nina and Albrecht!

“After living in Berlin and Milan, we initially thought we wanted to buy a space in Italy; but after discovering this gorgeous manor, full of potential and surrounded by parkland, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we knew we had to return to Germany and renovate the house and gardens to their former glory.”

They love…

“We know glamping from the UK and France and missed it in Germany. We both work with art and fashion, so we loved the idea of creating tented spaces full of personality, magic and texture.

Nina and Albrecht’s insider tips

  • Head to the Garden Pavillion, and make the most of our ‘Späti’; grab a picnic basket and fill it with homemade produce and natural wines. Then spend the afternoon by the pond or a nearby swimming lake (borrow one of our bikes to get there!)
  • Book an afternoon on our sailing yacht, which is moored on Lake Kummerow, and let Albrecht sail you across the water as you swim and enjoy an aperitivo
  • Our favourite swimming lake is the "Little Lake" in the neighbouring village (3.5 km away)
  • Starting from our doorstep, you can go on a variety of hikes, ranging from 3-30 km; we suggest you head to the nature reserve Ostpeene, which meanders elegantly through forest and valley or take the trail that leads from Sommersdorf to Gravelotte along the small steep coast at the Kummerower See

Glamping im Gutspark

Glamping at its best! The tents are furnished with great attention to detail in the tradition of literary romance and beautifully embedded in nature, the wood-burning stoves exude a cozy warmth at night, the tarte flambée and breakfast to order leave nothing to be desired, and Albrecht and Nina, the hosts, are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for romantic hideaways!

THE
ESSENTIALS

  • Need to know: Glamping im Gutspark is open seasonally, from the end of April until the beginning of October.
  • Sleeping arrangements: Each of the tents is completely unique, but all have a double bed; a camping bed or mattress can be added for a small child. For cooler nights, there is a wood-burning in each tent.
  • Bathroom set-up: There’s a private, outdoor shower at the heart of the park, that has warm water. At the Garden Pavilion and near the outdoor shower are two toilet blocks with environmentally friendly compost toilets, featuring a separation chamber system and wash basin with running water, mirror, soap and towels. The toilets are cleaned daily.
  • Food: At the Garden Pavillion, you find a fridge and freezer boxes for storing food, as well as crockery, cutlery, candles and tablecloths. There’s an outdoor kitchen and firepit that guests can use, as well as a ‘Spätkauf’ honesty bar, stocked with a selection of drinks and local produce. Guests can also order breakfast (extra charge), which is a luxurious affair consisting of seasonal specials and homemade pastries and sourdough bread (baked onsite), as well as tea and coffee. A champagne breakfast can also be ordered. Monday, Wednesday and Friday guests are offered tarte flambée and natural wine (between 7-8pm). Guests in groups can also request personalised culinary packages.
  • For families: Children are welcome, and a camp bed can be provided for the tents; it’s not the most child-friendly space (due to the wild nature of the park) but as long as children are supervised, they’ll love it here.
  • On-site equipment: There’s a sauna onsite, and a sailing boat moored nearby, that guests can enjoy. Meditation and coaching can be arranged, too.
  • Help: Nina and Albrecht live onsite, and are around to answer any queries you should have.
  • Remember to pack: Bring mosquito spray, hiking shoes and swimwear.
  • Pets: Pets are allowed in some, but not all, of the tents for an extra charge.
  • Sustainability: Nina and Albrecht have been very considerate of the historic parkland, and the glamping tents are built on platforms that allow nature to grow freely.
