A stunningly-renovated 1920s schoolhouse with eclectic interiors, hidden at the edge of a picturesque Brandenburg village

WHAT?

Weekends are for escapism, and Alte Schule Brandenburg couldn’t be a better example of how to do this in style. Owner Corinna bought the house in 2017, and spent 2 years renovating it herself, ensuring everything was just right. The result is sublime: exposed wooden beams, splashes of colour, an upright piano, Danish-design pieces and mismatched furniture, some of which was built by her Grandfather.

Come with friends, come with your family, or come with your significant other, but whoever you’re with, you’re guaranteed a good time. The most difficult question is simply what to do first: Explore the unspoilt forest on your doorstep? Take the rowing boat or the stand-up paddle boards out on the lake? Or simply succumb to the house, and kick-back in the garden toasting marshmallows? What isn’t questionable, is just how striking this red-brick, former schoolhouse is, it’s somewhere you’ll be back to more than once!

WHY?

I fell in love because...
  • There’s incredible attention to detail: from splashes of colour to hung dried flowers
  • This is the perfect place to celebrate: a birthday, a bachelorette, or simply just because
You must...
  • Take to the water in the rowboat or with the standup-paddle boards
  • Hang out in the garden: collect fresh eggs from the resident chickens for breakfast, then - in the evening - set up the outdoor cinema and laze in the hammock by the fire pit
You might dislike...
  • It’s quite difficult to get to with public transport
  • There’s no central heating, but there is an indoor fireplace to keep things cosy

WHO?

Introducing Corinna!

“Alte Schule Brandenburg was designed to be the perfect countryside getaway.”

She loves…

“Close by is the cutest little place, insl.de, which is a MUST visit! You walk along the lake to a footbridge where there is a gong. When rung, a boat comes to pick you up and takes you to a tiny island. Here you find an idyllic garden and restaurant with a waterside terrace - the food is delicious. I could stay all day.”

Corinna’s insider tips:
  • Make the most of Alte Schule Brandenburg’s yoga studio, before cooking up a feast on the BBQ: you can get some great local produce from the market (10-minutes by car)
  • Visit the unexplained mummified Christian Friedrich von Kahlbutz (even the Charité couldn’t explain it!). According to local legend, when accused in court of murdering a local shepherd, he swore: “If I am the murderer, then God willing, let my body not rot” …!
  • Between May and September, the Waldkino Kryritz has a programme packed full of workshops, talks, and - of course - movies
  • An authentic visit to Brandenburg wouldn’t be complete without a German spa session! Head to the Resort Mark Brandenburg for relaxation in the form of massage and saunas

WHERE?

Alte Schule Brandenburg is located in Sechzehneichen, Brandenburg, a village of just 60 people, surrounded by forest and lakes.

It’s a 1.5-hour drive from Berlin.

You could take public transport, but it’s pretty awkward. The best stations to arrive to would be Kyritz or Neustadt (Dosse), but, from these, you’d have to take buses to Alte Schule Brandenburg and they only come a few times a day.

HOW?

If you mention the Staycation Collection whilst booking, you’ll get a small gift on arrival.
