Individually designed apartments blending old and new, masterfully crafted inside the outhouses on a heritage-listed estate, complete with pool, sauna and tennis courts, in the heart of the Uckermark

WHAT?

Hidden away, at the end of a cobblestone street in the rolling hills of the Uckermark’s Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve lies this impressive baroque manor house. Built in the early 18th century, it’s a grand structure surrounded by a six-hectare landscaped park featuring two lakes, here is where you’d find owner Maria who spent a lot of time and energy renovating the surrounding listed farm buildings into unique holiday apartments, in collaboration with architect Ferdinand v. and landscape architect Georg von Gayl.

The apartments are all individually designed and strikingly beautiful. The wooden beams that were once the main structure of the former outhouses and barns have been kept and exposed. Materials are bold; think concrete, exposed wood and metallic structures. Furniture is bold and modern. But best of all is that they all feel welcoming and homey.

The sprawling estate feels like a home-from-home and you are left to wander freely (as long as you avoid the main house). Spend your mornings with a leisurely dip in the pool, which is planted with a lot of lavender and feels almost Mediterranean. Take an afternoon stroll through the grounds, into the village and perhaps to the next for lunch. Return for a game of tennis, before finishing your day in the sauna. Or, do what we did, and just unwind in the apartments and on the terrace with a book. The quiet calm of this place is magic.

WHY?

I fell in love because...
  • The renovations of the historic park are magnificent, and the apartments effortlessly blend bold, modern furniture with exposed wood and brickwork, creating unique spaces
  • This is one of the most stunning parts of Brandenburg, and the nature you have on your doorstep is unspoilt
You must...
  • Make the most of the grounds by exploring the parkland with its ponds, and indulging with a swim in the heated pool followed by unwinding in the sauna
  • Bring (or rent) a bike, and explore the region via the cycle paths that go past the manor
You might dislike...
  • Twenty apartments, plus a manor house that is privately used, makes it sound like you won’t have much privacy, but there are over six hectares of parkland
  • Unless you are staying put, a car is ideally needed to explore the area and travel to restaurants

WHO?

Introducing Maria!

“The Groß Fredenwalde estate is over 600 years old, and has had many lives. We’re happy that, in the past decades, it’s become a place to relax for people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city, and we’re proud that by restoring the listed complex of manor house, outbuildings and manor park, and reviving it through contemporary use, we are consciously contributing to the preservation of regional culture.”

She loves…

“We’re really proud of the renovation, and we want to share it with our guests so they can also enjoy our park, pool, and sauna, as well as the peace and nature of the Uckermark.’

Maria’s insider tips

  • We’re really proud of the listed landscape park, which dates from the mid-19th century and was carefully restored between 2015 and 2019. There are two ponds, a large playground, and a volleyball net, as well as a fireplace in the courtyard which offers space for a shared campfire.
  • The surrounding area is beautiful: explore by bike or canoe (available to rent from Otto-Mobils in Flieth); swim in the crystal-clear waters of Sabinensee; or go riding with Jenny Alpermann's “Islandpferde Eulenburg”.
  • Rotating exhibitions take place in Groß Fredenwalde’s stable museum, which was founded and run by the artist Inge Mahn - the space is always worth a visit.
  • A little further afield, are the historic cities of Prenzlau, Templin and Angermünde, plus Boitzenburg Castle, about 20-25 km away, with its landscape park designed by Lenné also shouldn’t be missed.

Gutshof Fredenwalde

"Great accommodations and beautiful grounds with pool, sauna, tennis court and fire pit. I particularly like the large park area with two ponds. This invites you to walk and linger."

THE
ESSENTIALS

  • Need to know: Towels and bed linen aren’t included in the price, but can be booked for a small additional fee.
  • Sleeping arrangements: Each of the apartments is individually designed, some are very cosy and some more spacious, but all have very cosy, enticing bedrooms and comfortable beds.
  • Bathroom set-up: Each of the apartments has its own, modern bathroom. Some are shower-only, and some have bathtubs, too.
  • Food: All apartments have modern, fully-equipped kitchens and BBQs.
  • For families: We’d recommend Gutshof Fredenwalde for families with older children.
  • On-site equipment: Pool (operated seasonally), sauna and tennis court are at your disposal free of charge, but a time slot must be reserved for the tennis courts and sauna.
  • Help: Help is available onsite, should you need it.
  • Remember to pack: Swimwear for the pool, tennis gear for a quick hit around the courts, and hiking shoes so you can explore the Uckermark’s rolling hills!
  • Pets: Not allowed.
  • Sustainability: Gutshof Fredenwalde received funding from the EU in order to develop sustainability more. For instance, they have solar panels on the stable roof in order to power a charging station for electric cars. Additional self-generated electricity from this is used in the apartments and to power the heat pump in the horse stable.

Gutshof Fredenwalde is in the Gerswalde area of Brandenburg.

You can drive here in just under an hour and a half from central Berlin, and there is parking onsite.
