WHAT?
Hidden inside a strikingly-beautiful red-brick house, somewhere on the west coast of Germany (this place isn’t even listed on Google Maps…), you’ll find bright white interiors and mismatched furniture, carefully curated and inspired by English seaside cottages.
The Lemonade Family visited Cornwall, on England's south-west coast. Here, they spent a wonderful holiday, sleeping in pretty, beautifully furnished cottages that were located in small villages and towns. It was during this trip that they were inspired to create a cosy cottage in one of their favourite parts of Germany.
The building itself dates from the 1780s, and before becoming a residential space, it was a milk and lemonade shop (funny combination, huh!). Luckily for us, the bold exterior, and lots of original details, have been restored and protected, and the family spent years carefully renovating the interiors, transforming the space into a bright, open space, full of unique decor, perfect for families and couples.
If you can bear to tear yourself away from the cottage and its courtyard garden, the Eiderstedt peninsula is a wonderful playground for lovers of the outdoors. With miles of sandy beaches, long bike trails and plenty of wildlife, it’s impossible to get bored.

WHY?
I fell in love because...
- The interiors are simply stunning; the bright white makes the space feel open, and the regional touches are anything but kitsch
- The Lemonade Family are one of the most passionate hosts; they personally welcome all guests and even have coffee catch up with the regulars!
You must...
- Hangout in the cosy courtyard garden, complete with climbing roses
- The Eiderstedt peninsula is rugged, wild and mesmeric; visit its landmarks, the Westerhever lighthouse and Haubargen - thatched farmhouses typical on the peninsula
You might dislike...
- The price for the first night is always significantly higher, but also includes a cleaning fee
- You’re ~10km away from the sea, but that has the benefit that you’re more shielded from the sometimes raging wind

WHO?
Introducing Family Lemonade!
“Cornwall inspired us to create this holiday cottage. We spent a wonderful family holiday there in pretty and beautifully furnished cottages located in small villages and towns. We brought back this charm to one of our most beloved regions in Germany.”
They love…
“We wanted to create a holiday home that feels like a real home without feeling cluttered or kitschy, and we believe we’ve done that! The regional reference is subtle (without encountering seagulls and morning lettering everywhere!), and there are small touches that represent our family. There are so many small details that are all coordinated with each other, there is a story to every piece.”
Family Lemonade’s insider tips
- In summer we love to have a little picnic on the beach as a family in the early evening while the children go for a swim. The beach then has its own quiet atmosphere, as many tourists head to Sankt Peter Ording for dinner after a long day at the beach.
- On midsummer evenings, we love the bike route behind the dike. It's light for a long time, the sheep are standing on the side of the road and you can usually cycle in one direction for quite a long time without encountering too many people.
- Our children (depending on the tide) love the green swimming area in Vollerwiek, which is wonderfully visible to parents, can be pleasantly warm when the water is running up and also offers a swimming view from the DLRG
Milch & Limonade
“The two of us really enjoyed our stay. Everything is so carefully and lovingly furnished, we were given great restaurant and shopping tips and received a very warm welcome from Annemarie. Absolutely recommended - we will definitely be back!”

THE
ESSENTIALS
- Need to know: The first night costs more than all the following nights, but the final cleaning charge is already included in the price.
- Sleeping arrangements: There are two bedrooms, one double and one twin. Note that the twin room has stairs to the ground floor at the centre (which can be secured), and you need to go through the twin room to access the double.
- Bathroom set-up: There’s a shower-only bathroom on the ground floor (rainfall shower), and there’s a washing trough, large enough for a baby to bathe in.
- Food: There’s a large, open-plan kitchen (shaker-style), fully equipped with everything you might need, as well as basic ingredients. There is a supermarket within walking distance, and a number of restaurants, too.
- For families: Families are incredibly welcome, and the twin room is furnished as a children’s room and has a selection of children's toys. Note that the twin room has a staircase in its centre, though this can be secured.
- On-site equipment: There’s a utility room, complete with a washer-dryer, as well as a SONOS sound system.
- Help: Annemarie is on hand should you need help or advice.
- Remember to pack: Swimwear and beach equipment!
- Pets: Pets are not allowed.
- Sustainability: The cottage was renovated by the family and local craftsmen, using regional and natural materials, such as wood, linen and concrete. A lot of the furniture is vintage.
WHERE?
The cottage is in a small town, 10 minutes from Sankt Peter-Ording on the west coast, very close to the North Sea.
You can easily drive (5 hours from Berlin, and 1h 45 from Hamburg), and there’s nearby free parking.
It’s easy enough to get here by public transport. Take the regional train from Hamburg to either Garding or Husum, from where you can get a bus.
